牾 [wǔ]
1. Opposite, not smooth.
- For example: 抵牾 (to conflict, to clash).
2. To meet (as in "encounter").
- Reference: 《史记·屈原贾生列传》: 重华不可牾兮,孰知余之从容. (Chonghua cannot encounter me, who knows my calmness.)
3. To violate, to go against.
- Reference: 《说文》: 牾,逆也. (牾 means to oppose.)
- Reference: 《汉书·严延年传》: 自郡吏以下皆畏避之,莫敢与牾. (From the county officials down, everyone feared it and dared not to violate it.)
Example:
- 抵牾 (to contradict, also written as 牴牾)
