铍 鈹 pí 〈名〉 1. A type of metallic element, known as beryllium, is one of the hard and lightweight metals, used in the manufacturing of airplanes, rockets, and the nuclear industry. It has the strongest ability to penetrate X-rays and can be used to make X-ray tubes. 2. A grayish steel-colored, light, hard, brittle, and toxic bivalent metallic element, with high electrical conductivity and high penetration capability for X-rays. It exists in compound form and can be reduced from its compounds (such as by electrolysis). It is mainly used as a hardening agent in alloys (e.g., with copper), in X-ray tubes as a window, and in nuclear reactors as a moderator and reflective layer (English: beryllium)—element symbol Be. 3.
