Definition of 「冴」:
1. Anciently the same as "讶."
2. (Phonetic compound. From "言" (speech) and "牙" (tooth sound). The original meaning: to welcome) Surprised, to welcome. From "言," the sound associated with "牙." The Zhou Li states that the feudal lords have officials for welcoming guests. It notes that words are necessary for initial encounters; hence it derives from "言," with the common character written as "迓." In the Zhou government, there are officials for welcoming and heads of reception. — "Shuowen Jiezi."
3. Examples: 讶客 (to welcome guests); 讶宾 (to welcome visitors).
