匏 [páo] Definition: 1. a. A one-year herbaceous plant. Its fruit is larger than a gourd and can be split in half to make a water ladle. b. The fruit of this plant, commonly known as "瓢葫芦" (water gourd). 2. One of the eight ancient musical instruments of China, such as the sheng and the yu. 本义: A type of gourd, specifically the "匏瓜" (páo guā). 造字法: Ideogram. "说文" states: "From 包 (bāo) and 瓠 (hù) simplified. 包 refers to its ability to contain things." "瓠" means gourd. The simplified form selects part of the character "瓠," namely "夸," and combines it with "包." 同本义 (Related meaning): gourd (English translation). 引 (Quotations): 1. "说文": 匏,瓠也。 (The "Shuo Wen": The "匏" is gourd.) 2. "诗·邶风·匏有苦叶": 匏有苦叶。 (Poem from "The Book of Songs": The water gourd has bitter leaves.) 3. "论语·阳货": 吾岂匏瓜也哉? (Analects: Am I a water gourd?) 4. "汉书·郊祀志下": 其器陶匏。 (Han Shu: Its vessel is a pottery gourd.)
