1. Wooden box; wooden cabinet. "匵" is a synonym for "匱" according to "Shuowen Jiezi • Fangbu". Wang Yun notes that it is similar in character to "櫝" in the "Mubu". In "Lunyu • Zihan", it mentions: "If there is beautiful jade here, should it be stored in a box? Seek a good merchant to sell it." Su Manshu’s "Duanhong Lingyanji" describes: "Beside it is a mahogany book box, resembling a dove cage, and it has a rich collection of books."
2. Small coffin. In "Hanshu • Yang Wangsun Zhuan": "In ancient times, during the burial of Emperor Yao, they used reeds to make a box." Yan Shigu notes: "匵 is indeed the same as the character for 櫝, and it refers to a small coffin." "Xintangshu • Huihu Zhuan" states: "Upon death, the body is placed in a wooden box and buried in the mountains, or tied to a tree, with a mourning procession."
