Original meaning: single-minded.
造字法: 形声。小篆字形。从壶,吉声。"一"的大写。
Character formation: phono-semantic. The small seal character is made from the element for "pot," with a phonetic element. It is the uppercase form of "one".
1. 同本义 ([En.] single-minded)
Single-minded in purpose.

"Shuōwén Jiězì": 壹 means single-minded.
2 《荀子·大略》:君子壹教,凝子壹学,亟成。
"Xúnzǐ: Dàlyuè": The virtuous man teaches single-mindedly, and the disciple learns diligently, leading to swift success.
3 《左传·文公三年》:与人之壹也。 注:“壹,无贰心。”
"Zuo Zhuan": To be in harmony with others is to be single-minded. Note: "壹" means no second thoughts.
4 《左传·昭二十年》:若琴瑟之专壹,谁能听之?
"Zuo Zhuan": Just like a zither and harp that are in harmony, who can hear them separately?

For example: 壹心 (one mind; concentration);

2. 统一;一致 ([En.] united; identical)
Unity; uniformity.

1 《商君书·赏刑》:圣人之为国也,壹赏,壹刑,壹教。
"Shang Jun Shu": For the sage governing a nation, there is a uniform reward, a uniform punishment, and a uniform teaching.
例:
又如: 壱同(统一);
For example: 壹同 (unified);
壹统 (one rule);
壹意 (unified intention);
壹体 (as one whole);
壹气 (unity of energy).
3. 皆; 一概; 一律 ([En.] all; one and all)
All; in general.
引:
1 《礼记·大学》:自天子以至于庶人,壹是皆一修身为本。
"Liji": From the emperor to the commoner, they all take self-cultivation as the foundation.
例:
又如: 壱是 (generally);
For example: 壹是 (one and all);
壹概 (in general, same);
壹切 (everything);
壹匡 (to correct everything).
4. 一样; 等同; 同一 ([En.] same; equal)
Same; equal.

1 《国语·晋语七》:镇静者修之,则壹。
"Guoyu": Those who practice calmness, then they are one.
例:
又如: 壱齐(齐一,划一);
