榊 (saka)
1. A character used in Japanese place names.
2. A type of evergreen flowering tree known as Cleyera ochnacea, belonging to the Pentaphylacaceae family. It features a large canopy and drooping branches. In Shintoism, it is used to demarcate or decorate sacred spaces. This tree grows in warm regions such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and mainland China, reaching heights of up to 10 meters (30 feet). In spring, it produces white, drooping flowers. Its branches are used for decorating shrines or festive venues, and parade participants may even carry entire trees with their roots still intact.
