Definition
Definition of 「矺」: 1. Ancient term synonymous with "磔," referring to a cruel punishment of dismemberment. 2. To strike or beat. In ancient sacrificial rites, the limbs of livestock were split. "磔" also means to betray. — From "Shuo Wen" (说文). The character derives from "桀," and the sound of stone. It refers to the act of slitting a chicken's chest and abdomen open and laying it out to dry, hence the use of "桀." Examples: - 磔禳 (refers to the splitting of animal bodies to sacrifice to the deities to eliminate bad omens); - 磔鸡 (in the old calendar, killing a chicken on the first day of the first month and hanging it outside the door to remove bad omens). It also indicates a form of ancient torture where a person is torn apart by a cart. “Did Wu Zixu not suffer dismemberment outside the east gate of Gusu?” — From "Xunzi" (荀子). Note: "车裂" refers to this form of punishment.
