皖 [wǎn] 1. A nickname for Anhui Province, China. 2. The name of a state during the Spring and Autumn period ([En.] Wan state). The Han dynasty established a county there, located to the north of Qianshan County in present-day Anhui Province. 3. An ancient place name ([En.] place's name). 引: 1. Gu Zuyu's "Reading Historical Geography": In the realm of Yangzhou according to "Yu Gong", during the Spring and Autumn period it was the state of Wan. In the Warring States period it belonged to Chu, during the Qin it was part of Jiujiang Commandery, and in both Han dynasties it was part of Lujiang Commandery. 2. A shorthand for Anhui Province, named after the presence of Wan Mountain (Tianzhushan) in the western part of the province. Example: 如: 皖公山 (also known as Qianshan, Wan Mountain, Tianzhushan); 皖派 (a school of Confucian thought during the Qing Dynasty, originating in Jiangyong and developing in southern Anhui, with figures such as Duan Yucai, Wang Niansun, and Wang Yinzh all belonging to this school). 3. An ancient place name ([En.] place's name). Example: 如: 皖口; 皖北; 皖城; 皖南; 皖县 (*引自繁体辞典解释) (1)​a variant pronunciation of this character.
