硼 [péng]
1. A non-metallic element that exists in both crystalline and non-crystalline forms. It is used to manufacture alloys and can also be used as a material in atomic reactors.
2. A trivalent high-melting point non-metallic element. In nature, boron exists only in compound forms (such as in borax and boric acid; it exists only in trace amounts in plants and animals). It is usually obtained by electrolyzing molten potassium fluoroborate and potassium chloride or by thermally reducing its other compounds (such as boron oxide). It is primarily used in metallurgy (for example, to increase steel hardness) and in nuclear physics due to its strong neutron absorption capacity. (English: boron) — Element symbol B.
