Definition
仏: 1. Same as "佛". It is a commonly used Japanese variant of the character. 2. Sanskrit. Translated as "Awakened One", "Knower", or "Awakening". Awakening has three meanings: self-awakening, awakening others (helping sentient beings to realize), and achieving perfect conduct; these are the highest fruits of Buddhist practice. It is said that ordinary beings lack these three aspects, those on the path of sound hearers and those awakened by conditions lack the last two, and bodhisattvas lack the final aspect; only a Buddha possesses all three. In the context of the Small Vehicle (Hinayana), "Buddha" is generally used as a title for Shakyamuni. In contrast, the Great Vehicle (Mahayana) not only refers to Shakyamuni but also generally refers to all beings who have achieved perfect conduct. It is stated that in all three times and ten directions, Buddhas are present everywhere.
