Gorgeous; splendid. --- Verb: To illuminate. - Example: In "Selected Works, Zuo Si, Shu Du Fu": "A quiet thought shines bright with virtue; I express elegance as I spread it out in the court of heaven." - Example: In the Southern Dynasty Liang, Yu Jianwu’s poem "At the Feast in Xuanyou Hall": "Your virtue will be holy, and the talent of Chen Wang shines in the sky." --- 1. In ancient times, it was interchangeable with "剡" (yǎn), meaning to sharpen or pare. - Example: "Carving wood to make a boat, sharp wood for the oar."
