2. A general term for tree species in the Lauraceae family, specifically within the Nanshu genus and the Runnanshu genus, including varieties such as fragrant nanmu (香楠), golden silk nanmu (金丝楠), and water nanmu (水楠). These trees are large hardwoods that can reach up to 30 meters when mature. Their wood has a fine grain, a hard texture, and a pleasant aroma, making it expensive and frequently used for shipbuilding and palace construction. Nanmu is extremely precious and has been included in China's list of key protected wild plants.
