熋 (hǒng) 1. Same as "bear" (熊). 2. Animal name. It has a large head, short and thick limbs, resembling a large pig. It has large paws and is able to climb. It often lives in burrows during winter and emerges at the beginning of spring. Referenced in "Book of Songs, Lesser Court Hymns, Si Gan": "What does a lucky dream signify? It signifies bears and leopards, and snakes and serpents." 3. Bear target, an ancient archery target decorated with bear skins. In "Rites of Zhou, Summer Officials, Archers": "The lords shoot at two targets with four chariots." Note by Han scholar Zheng Xuan: "The two targets refer to bears and leopards."
