One of the non-metal elements. It dissolves in a mixture of alkali, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid but is insoluble in water, nitric acid, and hydrochloric acid. Its chemical properties are similar to carbon. There are two forms: crystalline silicon and amorphous silicon. The former is in needle-like or plate-like crystalline form, gray and glossy, and does not undergo chemical changes when heated in air; the latter is a brown powder that can produce silicon dioxide when burned in the air.
