Definition of 「藍」:
1. **Liao Lan (藜蓝)**. A genus in the Polygonaceae family. It is an annual herb. The leaves resemble those of liao but are not pungent. After drying, they turn dark blue, can be processed into indigo, and are used as a dye. The leaves are also used medicinally. It also broadly refers to plants with leaves that contain blue sap, which can be processed into indigo dye, such as Wu Lan, Song Lan, and Ma Lan. "Shuowen Jiezi" (說文•艸部): "Lan, a dyeing green grass." "Xunzi" (荀子•勸學): "Qing comes from Lan, and is bluer than Lan." "Liji" (禮記•月令): "In the month of midsummer, people should not cut lan for dyeing." Zheng Xuan notes: "To prevent harm to the long-acting essence, this month, lan can be separated." "Qimin Yaoshu" (齊民要術•序) quotes "Zhong Changzi": "What is the difference between a bug in liao and not knowing if lan lacks sweetness?"
2. **Deep blue-green color**. Examples: sky blue; azure. "Lunheng" (論衡•本性): "The most vile things do not undergo the changes of lan and vermilion." Jiang Yan's poem from the Southern Liang Dynasty: "Like lan and vermilion forming colors, the mixtures change endlessly." Tang poet Meng Jiao's "Lanxi Yuan Ju Shi Cao Tang": "Blue shores faint and boundless, blue peaks deep and lofty."
3. **Excessive, unrestrained**. "Da Dai Li Ji" (大戴禮記•文王官人): "Overflow it with profits to observe its lack of greed; let it be indulged with pleasures to see its unrest." Wang Pinzhen explains: "Lu (Bian) annotates: ‘Lan is also an excess.’ According to Pinzhen, pleasure refers to sound and color. Ning indicates chaos and unrest."
4. **End, last part**. Tang poet Bai Juyi's "Year-end family banquet humorously showed to nephews": "After the year, the lan tail wine is offered first, Spring platter first promotes gel teeth and teeth cakes."
5. **Buddhist temple**, an abbreviated term for the Sanskrit "jialan (伽蓝)." "Wuding Huiyuan" (五燈會元) volume 17: "To the left of the county is the Tianhuang Temple, named Lan, which was abandoned due to fire." Jin playwright Dong Jieyuan's "Xixiangji" (西廂記) volume 1: "More than ten miles east of Puzhou, there is a temple called Pujiu, which follows the teachings of Da Tian, builds monk temples using the internal treasury, and does not pride itself here." Yuan poet Nai Xian's "Chengnan Gu Ying - Bamboo Forest Temple": "Noble clans leave, reverently bowing to the Emperor."
6. **Surname**. "Tongzhi Di Zu Lue" (通志低族略五) notes the Lan family, originating from Zhongshan. "Strategies of the Warring States" (戰國策) refers to Lan Zhu, the governor of Zhongshan.
