鼔 (gǔ)
1. Ancient same as "鼓" (gǔ) - drum.
2. Percussion instrument. Usually round barrel-shaped or flat and round, hollow in the middle, with one or two sides covered with leather. “The blind man plays the drum, the servant runs, the common people flee.” (Book of Documents, Yin Zheng)
3. General term for musical instruments. In ancient times, drums were used to regulate other instruments. The ancients believed it to be the leader of all sounds, hence the name. “Playing the drum rhythmically, honoring our great ancestors.” (Book of Songs, Shang Song, Na) “There were two beautiful daughters from the Rong clan who built a nine-layered platform, and food and drink were always accompanied by drums.” (Records of the Grand Historian, Music)
