苕 [tiáo] 1. In ancient books, it refers to the Chinese trumpet creeper (凌霄花). 2. [苕子] A one-year or two-year herbaceous plant with slender stems and fern-like compound leaves, bearing purple flowers, used as green manure. Also known as "wild pea." 3. Refers to the flowers of the reed (苇子). 苕 [tiáo] 1. Same as the original meaning ([En.] Chinese trumpet creeper). 2. A deciduous woody vine from the Bignoniaceae family, climbing by aerial roots on other objects. The flower is funnel-shaped and bell-like, large and bright, orange-red in color, cultivated for ornamental purposes, and used in medicine to break blood and remove stasis. 3. Examples: 苕华 (flower name, which is the Chinese trumpet creeper); 苕荣 (the flower of the Chinese trumpet creeper, also metaphorically referring to beauty); 苕颖 (referring to herbaceous flowers and grain ears, often generalized to plants' flowers, ears, and stems). 4. 苕菜, known as Chinese milk vetch ([En.] Chinese milk vetch). A legume that is an excellent green manure crop and also used as a vegetable and animal feed. 5. Originally written as “芀”. The flower of reed. The spike can be used to make brooms ([En.] spike of reed). 6. Name of a river ([En.] Tiao River). 7. Examples: 苕水 (the name of a river in present-day Shaanxi Province and Zhejiang Province); 苕溪 (name of a river with two sources: the eastern Tiao from the south of Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang Province, and the western Tiao from the north of Tianmu Mountain. The two streams converge and flow into Taihu Lake. In autumn, flowers float on the water like falling snow, hence it is named). 苕 [tiáo] 1. High, far ([En.] high; far). 2.
