1. Marshy land between mountains. In "Shuowen Jiezi, Koubu": “㕣, marshy land between mountains.” Duan Yucai's annotation: “陷 should be written as 淊; this is a mistake in the character. In "Shuibupu", it says: ‘淊, muddy water.’”
2. Name of a state; later written as "兗" and also as "沇". In "Gujin Yunhui Juyao, Xianyun": “兗, originally written as 㕣; commonly referred to as 沇.” In Qing Dynasty Zhu Junsheng's "Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng, Tunbu": “㕣, 沇, and 兖 (兗) were originally one character. A spring emerging from Zhuo Ru is called 㕣, and the ancient name for the upstream of the river was written as 沇; this led to the name of the state being derived from 沇, later it was separately created as the character 兖 (兗).”
