嘼 1. Livestock; later written as "畜". Originally the same as "單," which in ancient texts appears as a complex character with the addition of "口". Since the Qin dynasty, its usage has been largely retained only in "兽". This character was reinterpreted in dictionaries after the "说文" period to be associated with the character "畜". "兽" is the early form of "狩" (hunting), and "單" depicts a type of weapon symbolically, frequently associated with hunting alongside "犬" (dogs). In "说文•嘼部" it states: "嘼, 㹌也 (referring to a type of dog)." 2. Same as "畜"; to raise or keep livestock. 3. Same as "畜"; to rear livestock. In "集韻•屋韻" it states: "畜 means to raise; anciently written as 嘼." 4. Same as "獸"; a popular character or abbreviated form of "犬," from which simplified characters are derived. 5. Same as "單".
