爭:

爭:
1. The traditional form of "争."
2. To seize; to not give way to each other. Example from "Zuo Zhuan": "Gongsun E and Ying Kaoshu contended for the carriage, and Ying Kaoshu ran away with the wheel." Example from "Bei Shi": "There were once two eagles, flying and contending for meat, and then they shot two with arrows, asking to catch them."
3. To compare; to compete. Example from "Shu Jing": "You do not boast; no one in the world can contest with you in ability. You do not take credit; no one in the world can contest with you in merit."
4. To debate. Such as: "To argue based on reason." Example from "Zuo Zhuan": "The people understood the dispute and were going to abandon ritual and rely on written laws." Example from "Shi Ji": "This cannot be argued with the tongue."
5. To differ; difference. Example from Du Xunhe’s poem: "After a hundred years, a little mound of earth, how much do riches and poverty differ?" Example from "Shui Hu Zhuan": "My family has trapped countless people, how can I contend for one?"
6. To admonish. Same as “諍.” Example from "Lü Shi Chun Qiu": "Guan Longfeng and Wang Zibi died due to their petitions, contending over their past mistakes."
7. How. Same as “怎.” Example from Han Weiwu’s poem: "If there were feelings, how could one not cry? Last night’s wind and rain buried Xi Shi." Example from Zhong Sicheng: "How to cope with gray ashes and soil, missing teeth and heavy chin."
