Definition of 「莖」:
1. See "茎".
2. (noun) The main body of the aerial part of a plant. It is the essential pathway for transporting substances within the plant and also serves as the primary supporting organ. Based on shape and structure, it can be divided into herbaceous and woody types. The stem of herbaceous plants is weak, and its height and thickness are limited during growth; while the stem of woody plants is thick and prominent.
3. The handle or stalk of an object. In the "Zhou Li · Dong Guan Kao Gong Ji · Tao Shi," it states: "To make it, use broad wax to create the stem, surrounding it twice its length." (Commentary by Zheng Xuan during the Han Dynasty: "Wax refers to two blades. The stem is what is enclosed in between.")
4. A measure word. It is a unit word used for counting slender, elongated objects. For example: "A few blades of grass." (Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu's "Yue You Yuan Ge": "A few strands of white hair, how can they be discarded? A hundred punishments with a deep cup, I will not decline.")
