Definition of 「諳」:
1. See "谙" (ān).
2. Verb: To be familiar with or to know.
Example: "不谙水性" (not familiar with the water's nature).
- Tang Dynasty, Wang Jian, "New Bride Song", third poem: "未谙姑食性,先遣小姑尝" (Not yet familiar with the nature of my aunt's food, I send the little aunt to taste it first).
- "老残游记" (The Travels of Lao Can), Chapter 14: "只因但会读书,不谙世故,举手动足便错" (Just because I know how to read, I am not familiar with worldly matters; every movement is a mistake).
