2. A general term for fish belonging to the order Siluriformes and the family Siluridae. They have large, flat heads, wide mouths, and four long whiskers on their upper and lower jaws. They are scaleless and have slimy skin. The back is dark grayish-black, while the belly is white, and the dorsal and pectoral fins possess poisonous spines. There are approximately 2,500 species, distributed worldwide. They inhabit rivers, lakes, and marshes, resting in the muddy bottom during the day and coming out at night to feed on small fish, shellfish, frogs, and other organisms.
