鳒 jiān 1. 〔~鱼〕 A type of flounder; its body is flattened and oval-shaped, asymmetrical, with both eyes on either the left or right side. The side with eyes is deep brown, while the side without eyes is light in color. It has a large mouth with sharp teeth. It lives in the ocean and its meat is edible. 2. (鰜) A member of the Psettodidae family of flounders (English: psettodid). Typically, both eyes are on the left side of the body, with the eye side being yellow-brown. It is mainly found in the South China Sea. 引 1. From "Anomalies of the Coastal Regions" by Shen Ying from the Three Kingdoms period: Flounder, also known as sole, and also known as 鳒. 2. From "Miscellaneous Records from the Qing Dynasty" by Xu Ke: In ancient times, it was also called 鳒. In Japan, the species with eyes on the right side is known as 鳒, while the one with eyes on the left side is referred to as 鲆.
