犴 [hān] 1. Elk - A type of deer, scientifically known as Alces alces, which is the largest living deer species found in Europe and Asia. It has a nose as long as a camel and males have antlers that are shovel-shaped. It is distributed in Northeast China, Mongolia, and Russia. Also known as “麋,” “犴达罕,” and “堪达罕.” 犴 [àn] 1. A type of wild dog found in northern China, resembling a small fox with a black mouth (fierce Mongolian dog; a species of wild dog with black mouth and nose). 2. In ancient times, a detention facility in rural areas, later referring to prisons. 3. See also hān. Note: The character can have multiple pronunciations and meanings.
