竭 [jié] 1. 尽,用尽。 - To use up; to exhaust. - Examples: 竭诚 (to give one's all); 竭尽 (to use up completely); 竭力 (to exert oneself fully); 竭泽而渔 (to drain the swamp to catch fish); 枯竭 (to dry up); 衰竭 (to weaken and exhaust); 声嘶力竭 (to shout hoarse from exertion); 用之不竭 (inexhaustible). 2. 同本义 ([En.] shoulder) - Original meaning: to carry on the shoulder. 3. 干涸;枯竭 ([En.] dry up; drain) - To dry up; to be drained. - Examples: 伊洛竭而夏亡 (the river is drained and the summer is lost); 渊泉不能竭 (the deep spring cannot be exhausted); 竭泽而渔 (draining the marshes to fish). 4. 穷尽 ([En.] use up; exhaust) - To run out; to use up completely. - Examples: 再而衰,三而竭 (exhausting after two times, used up after three); 彼竭我盈 (they are exhausted while we are abundant); 庶竭驽钝 (let us exhaust our dullness); 竭力 (to exhaust an effort). 5. 亡;失去 ([En.] die) - To lose; to perish. - Example: 唇竭则齿寒 (when the lips are exhausted, the teeth become cold). 6. 败坏;毁灭 ([En.] decay; ruin) - To decay; to ruin. - Example: 且律竭先 (decay comes first, then fullness). 副 1. 悉;全 ([En.] completely; entirely) - Examples: 竭绝 (complete; to the end).
