菩 [pú] (名) 1. 〔菩提〕 a. In Buddhism, refers to the state of enlightenment or profound understanding; also signifies the wisdom and path to enlightenment. b. A type of evergreen tree, the sap of which can be used to produce hard rubber, originally from India. 2. 〔菩萨〕 a. In Buddhism, refers to the title of Shakyamuni before achieving Buddhahood, later used for someone who has attained a certain level of practice, ranking just below a Buddha. b. A general term for Buddhas and certain deities. c. Metaphorically refers to a compassionate person. 引: 1. From "广韵": 菩, Sanskrit for 菩提, in Chinese it means "the royal way." 2. Again refers to the wisdom of enlightenment and the path to enlightenment; also the name of the tree, namely the Bodhi tree. 3. "菩萨": A Buddhist term. An abbreviation of Sanskrit Bodhi-sattva, originally a title for Shakyamuni during his practice before achieving Buddhahood, later broadly used to refer to practitioners of Mahayana thought; also refers to idols of worship or metaphorically to kind-hearted individuals.
