萎 [wěi] 〈动〉 1. 干枯衰落。 Wither; wilt. 例如: 萎谢 (wither away), 萎蔫 (wilt), 萎顿 (also written as "委顿"), 萎靡 (fade away), 萎缩 (shrink). 2. 引申指病危。 Be critically ill. 例如: 萎约 (illness and poverty), 萎折 (death), 萎哲 (referring to the death of a wise person), 萎绝 (death; extinction). 3. 衰落;衰弱。 Decline; weaken. 例如: 萎悴 (decline), 萎餧 (weaken due to hunger; "餧" is the same as "馁"). --- 草木枯黄。 Plants turn yellow. 如:「枯萎」。《诗经·小雅·谷风》:「无草不死,无木不萎。」 For example: "withered"; from "The Book of Songs, Lesser Odes, Valley Wind": "There is no grass that does not die, no tree that does not wilt." 衰病。 Decline due to illness. 《礼记·檀弓上》:「泰山其颓乎?梁木其坏乎?哲人其萎乎?」汉·郑玄·注:「萎,病也。」 From "The Book of Rites, Tan Gong Shang": "Is Mount Tai collapsing? Are the beams breaking? Is the wise man sick?" Han scholar Zheng Xuan annotated: "萎 means sick." 衰颓、不振奋。 Decline; lack of vitality. 如:「萎靡不振」。《魏书·卷六一·薛安都传》:「民人萎,无以济之。」 For example: "listless and unenergetic"; from "The Book of Wei, Volume 61, Biography of Xue Andu": "The people's energy is wasted, they have no way to save themselves."
