鼹 (yǎn)
1. 〔~鼠〕A mammal measuring over ten centimeters, with black-brown fur, hooked claws on its toes, adept at digging. It lives underground during the day and hunts insects at night, also consuming roots of crops. Commonly referred to as "地排子" (di pái zi).
2. 鼹鼠 (mole): A burrowing mammal belonging to the family Talpidae, mainly found in temperate regions of Eurasia and North America, with tiny eyes often covered by skin, small ears hidden in fur, and soft, shiny coat. It has strong feet suitable for jumping. For example, "鼹鼠饮河" (yǎn shǔ yǐn hé) metaphorically refers to having modest desires that are easily satisfied; "鼹肠" (yǎn cháng) refers to the small intestines of field mice, used metaphorically to describe someone with a narrow measure or perspective.
