垸 [yuàn]
1. In Hunan and Hubei provinces of China, a dam or dike built in areas with lakes to block water; also refers to the area enclosed by such a dam. Example: 垸子 (yuànzi). 堤垸 (dī yuàn). 垸田 (yuàn tián).
2. A waterproof structure resembling a dam, built around houses and fields in areas along rivers and lakes in Hunan and Hubei (English: dyke). Commonly referred to as "垸子" (yuànzi).
3. To coat objects with lacquer and ash.
4. An ancient unit of weight and currency, pronounced the same as "锾" (huán).
5. Verb: To repair walls. According to "Shuōwén Jiězì" (Theory of Characters): "垸 means to repair walls."
6. Noun: A unit of measurement for calculating weight. In "Zhou Li" (Rites of Zhou), it states: "For a certain type of arrow, its blade is one inch long, its circumference one inch, and has ten tings, weighing three 垸." According to Zheng Xuan's commentary on Zheng Zhong, "垸 is a unit of measure."
