堪 [kān]
1. 能,可以,足以。
- Capable, possible, sufficient.
- Example: 不~设想 (Unimaginable), ~当重任 (Able to take on heavy responsibilities), ~以告慰 (Able to give comfort).
2. 忍受,能支持。
- To endure, can withstand.
- Example: 难~ (Hard to bear), 不~一击 (Cannot withstand a single blow), 狼狈不~ (Cannot endure embarrassment), 疲惫不~ (Cannot endure fatigue).
3. (名) 本义: 地面高起
- (Noun) Original meaning: A raised piece of ground.
- Example: 堪岩 (Mountain shape is deep and secluded).
4. 指天道。
- Refers to the law of nature and its development.
- Example: 堪舆 (Heaven and earth; Feng Shui; also refers to a Feng Shui master); 堪舆家 (In the past, a type of fortune-teller, later specifically referred to someone who specializes in Feng Shui).

- (Verb) To bear (difficulties, pain, or experiences).
- Example: 人不堪其忧,回也不改其乐 (People cannot bear their worries, but Confucius does not change his happiness).
