荩 jìn 1. A type of annual herbaceous plant, with very slender stems and oval-lanceolate leaves. The stems and leaves can be used to produce yellow dye, and the fibers can be used as raw materials for paper-making. Commonly known as "荩草" (hispid arthraxon) or "黄草" (yellow grass). 2. Same as "进" (to advance; to promote). Refers to loyal ministers (originally referring to ministers chosen by emperors, later referring to loyal subjects). 3. Same as "烬" (ashes), referring to unburnt remnants of firewood, and generally indicating leftover items. 荩 jìn 1. 荩草 ([En.] hispid arthraxon). An annual herbaceous plant (Arthraxon hispidus) with very slender stems, gray-green or purplish flowers. The stems and leaves can produce yellow dye, and the fibers can be used for paper-making. Example: 荩箧 (a box woven from 荩草). 2. Leftover firewood. More generally refers to remaining items. Same as "烬" ([En.] ashes). Example: 荩滞 (the fading echoes of music). 荩 jìn 形 Same as "进" (to advance). Originally denoted loyalty, later extended to mean loyal ([En.] loyal). Example references: 1.
