2. (gadolinium, Gd) A chemical element. Atomic number 64. One of the rare earth metal elements. Silvery-white. It reacts with water in moist air, forming an oxide film. Soluble in dilute acid, it possesses magnetic and ductile properties. Its oxides and sulfides are both light red. It can be used in microwave technology, as phosphors in color television, in the atomic energy industry, and in the preparation of special alloys.
