凸 【tū】
形 1. High or raised; protruding outwards, opposite of "凹" (concave). For example: 凸出 (to bulge out), 凸起 (to rise up), 凸透镜 (convex lens), 凸凹不平 (uneven in height).
Example:
如: 凸兀 (high up); 凸凸 (looks raised); 凸凸囊囊 (bulging); 凸凹 (high and low); 凸杯 (full cup); 凸岸 (convex bank); 凸镜 (convex mirror); 凸透镜 (convex lens).
2. (Referring to the moon or planet) the visible bright portion is greater than a semicircle but not a full circle (gibbous).
Example:
如: 凸月 (gibbous moon).
动 1. To protrude or be elevated outside the surrounding surface or range (protrude).
Example:
如: 凸出来 (to bulge out); 挺胸凸肚 (to thrust out the chest and belly); 凸起 (to bulge); 凸露 (to stand out); 凸显 (to protrude and reveal); 凸出 (to be raised or elevated).
2. To extend; to project.
Example:
如: 有些地方的墙壁凸成了厚实的扶壁了 (Some parts of the wall extended into solid buttresses).
形 1. Elevated, prominent. The opposite of "凹." Example: 凸眼 (protruding eyes), 凸透镜 (convex lens).
Example from literature: 唐·陆龟蒙《奉酬袭美先辈吴中苦雨一百韵》: “先夸屋舍好,又恃头角凸.”
Another example: 《浮生六记·卷二·闲情记趣》: “以土砾凸者为邱,凹者为壑.”
动 1. Protruding or bulging. For example: 凸著肚子 (having a bulging stomach). It can also mean "鼓" (to bulge).
