椰 [yē] 名 1. 〔椰子〕❶ A type of evergreen tree found in tropical regions, featuring a very tall trunk, with oval-shaped drupes. The flesh is white, juicy, and edible, and can also be pressed to make oil. The shell can be made into various utensils, and the leaves can be used for roofing, weaving mats, and making fans; ❷ The fruit of this plant, commonly referred to as "椰", as seen in terms like "椰油" (coconut oil), "椰杯" (coconut cup), "椰雕" (coconut carving), "椰蓉" (coconut shavings), and "椰胡" (a string instrument made from a half coconut shell). 2.椰子树 (English: cocoanut) An evergreen tree with a straight, unbranched trunk and a crown of leaves at the top. The drupe is oval-shaped, with a brownish-yellow outer skin and a hard, horn-like inner shell. The flesh is white, juicy, and fatty. The flesh is edible and can be pressed for oil. The juice from the flesh can be made into a drink, the fibers from the outer and middle skins can be used for ropes and brushes, and the leaves can be woven into mats or used for thatching roofs.
