虾
蝦 xiā
1. An animal name ([En.] shrimps). A type of crustacean belonging to the phylum Arthropoda, class Malacostraca, order Decapoda, and suborder Pleocyemata. Characterized by many small antennae, a slender body, a laterally compressed abdomen, long legs, and a somewhat spiny rostrum. Lives in water and comes in many varieties.
- Examples: 虾皮 (shrimp skin), 虾米 (dried shrimp), 虾子 (shrimp eggs), 虾兵蟹将 (a metaphor for ineffective soldiers, referring to the soldiers of the Dragon King in mythology).
2. [Verb] To bend like a shrimp ([En.] bend).
- Example: 虾腰 (to bow in greeting), 虾朐 (refers to a hunchbacked person).
3. A term in Manchu for the imperial bodyguard ([En.] imperial bodyguard).
- Example: During the Qing dynasty, it was noted that Wang Fucheng was called "虾" by some nobles.
