鹬 yù 名 【本义】: 水鸟鹬 1. A type of bird with brown feathers, long beak, and long legs, having no webbing between the toes, commonly found near water or in fields, where it catches small fish, insects, and shellfish. 2. Common term for many species in the family Scolopacidae (tattlers). This refers to various hunting birds of the genus Capella, resembling the upland sandpiper but smaller, featuring very long beaks used for probing mud in search of worms and other food. The upper body is usually mottled dark brown; the underparts are yellowish and chestnut, with striping on the tail and sides. 【引】 1. From "Shuowen": 鹬, refers to kingfisher, indicating the weather is about to rain. 2. From "Liji": Those who understand celestial phenomena wear a decorative headpiece resembling a snipe. 3. From "Bencao Gangmu": The 襦 (snipe) is like a quail, has a blue-green color with a long beak, and is known for making a "yù yù" sound in mudflats; villagers say it transformed from field chicken and is also related to the quail. This refers to the phrase "neither the clam nor the snipe will win," which originates from Su Qin's quote. 4. From "Zhanguo Ce": While the clam is exposed, the snipe pecks at its flesh. 【例】 Also: 鹬鹬 (the call of the water snipe); 鹬冠 (head ornament made from snipe feathers, historically worn by astronomers).
