予 [yú]
1. 同“余”,我。
- "Yu" is a variant of "余," meaning I or me.
2. “予”假借为“余”,我:
- "Yu" is borrowed from "余," meaning I (En. I, me).
- 例: 予智自雄(自夸聪明,妄自夸大)。
Example: I consider myself wise and grandiose (boasting about wisdom).
- 予取予求(原指从我这里取,从我这里求;后指任意索取)。
Example: To take or demand as one pleases (originally meant to take or ask from me; later it referred to arbitrary demand).
3. 给与。
- To give or bestow.
- 例: 予以。
Example: Bestow upon.
- 赐予、赋予、给与、生杀予夺(亦作“生杀与夺”)。
Example: Bestow, bestow as a grace, to give, life and death power (also written as “生杀与夺”).
4. 【本义】: 授予;给予
- Original meaning: to grant; to give.
5. 赞许,称誉。
- To praise, to commend.
6. 出售,卖。
- To sell.

- 予知 (self-proclaimed wise); 予美 (one's beloved); 予圣 (self-proclaimed saint); 予一人 (ancient emperors' self-reference); 予小子 (ancient self-reference to ancestors or elders); 予取予携 (to take and carry as one pleases).
- 予违汝弼 (encouragement from ancient emperors to minister for correct advice).
