啻 [chì] 副词。但；只；仅。常用在表示疑问或否定的字后，组成“不啻”、“匪啻”、“何啻”、“奚啻”等词，在句中起连接或比况作用。 Adverb. But; only; merely. Commonly used after words that indicate a question or negation to form phrases such as "不啻" (not only), "匪啻" (far from), "何啻" (how), and "奚啻" (why), serving a connective or comparative function in sentences. 《説文•口部》：“啻，語時〔詞〕，不啻也。” "Shuo Wen Jie Zi" states: “啻, when used in speech, signifies ‘not only’.” 《書•多士》：“爾不克敬，爾不啻不有爾土，予亦致天之罰於爾躬。” "In the Book of Documents: ‘If you cannot show respect, it is as if you do not have your land, and I will also bring the punishment of heaven upon you.’" 孔傳：“不但不得還本土而已，我亦致天罰於汝身。” Confucius' commentary: “Not only will you not return to your land, but I will also bring divine punishment upon you.” 唐杜荀鶴《旅中卧病》：“胡園何啻三千里，新雁纔聞一兩聲。” Tang poet Du Xunhe's poem states: "The Hu garden is more than three thousand miles, where the new geese only heard one or two cries." 清黄宗羲《明夷待訪录•田制三》：“今民間田土之價，懸殊不啻二十倍。” Qing scholar Huang Zongxi noted: "Now the price of farmland among the people varies by not less than twenty times." 是；理。 It signifies reason; principle. 《説文•口部》：“一曰啻，諟也。” "Shuo Wen Jie Zi" mentions: "Another meaning is found in ‘啻’, which pertains to reason." 余，剩下。 Remaining or leftover. 《集韻•寘韻》：“啻，餘也。” In "Ji Yun": "啻 means surplus."
