眈 [dān] 1. 注视。 Glare; to stare. 2. 古同“耽”,沉溺。 An ancient equivalent of "耽", meaning to indulge or become engrossed in something. 3. 虎视;雄视 ([En.] glare). To glare like a tiger; to look fiercely. 4. 爱好;迷恋 ([En.] be keen on; indulge in). To have a fondness for; to be infatuated with. 引: 1. 《说文》:眈,视近而志远也。从目,冘声。 "Shuowen": 眈 means to look closely but aspire far away. It consists of the component for 'eye' and the phonetic indication冘 (yín). 2. 《易·颐》:虎视眈眈。马注:“虎不眎貌。” From "Yi Jing": The phrase means to glare like a tiger. The commentary mentions, "the tiger does not care for appearances." 3. 《广雅》:眈眈,视也。 From "Guangya": 眈眈 means to observe or look. 4. 眈眈,威视之貌。——《汉书·叙传》注。按,训下视者,紞为组下垂,耽为耳下垂,故眈为目下视也。 "Han Shu" commentary: 眈眈 refers to a fierce, intimidating gaze. This passage explains that the look downward indicates an instinctive or imposing observation. 5. 《集韵》:眈,虎视也。 "Jiyun": 眈 also refers to glaring like a tiger. 6. 例:如:眈悦(酷爱;喜爱) Example: 如:眈悦 (to have a strong passion or affection).
