【本义】: 蟾蜍 (toad)
1. 同本义 (toad)
- A type of amphibian with many bumps on its skin, containing toxic glands, resembling a frog. It eats insects and snails, beneficial for agriculture. Colloquially known as "癞蛤蟆" (làiháma) or "疥蛤蟆" (jièhámá); in ancient times referred to as "蟾诸" (chánzhū). Commonly abbreviated as "蟾", as in "蟾酥" (chán sū) which is white and medicinal; "蟾宫" (chán gōng) which refers to the moon; "蟾桂" (chán guì); "蟾轮" (chán lún) meaning full moon; "蟾辉", "蟾光", "蟾魄" (all referring to moonlight); "蟾宫折桂" (chán gōng zhé guì) an old metaphor referring to success in the imperial examination.
2. 传说中月有蟾蜍。所以称月为蟾 (moon)
- In legends, it is said that there is a toad on the moon, thus the moon is referred to as "蟾" (chán).
- Examples: "蟾桂" (chán guì) refers to the toad and osmanthus tree in mythology; "蟾宫" (chán gōng) refers to the palace on the moon.
