(Verb) - (Phonetic: Xiàn) The original meaning: To be ingratiating and to cater to others. - Same meaning as above (English: adulate; flatter). Examples: 1. From “The Analects of Confucius, Xue Er”: “Be poor without flattery and wealthy without arrogance.” 2. From “Mencius, Teng Wen Gong Xiao”: “Cunningly smiling and flattering, but suffering in the midst of petty troubles.” 3. From Song Dynasty's Wen Tianxiang: “Unfortunately, Lu Shimen plotted against me in the front, while Jia Yuqing flattered me in the back.” Examples of Usage: - Flattering official (谄臣: a courtier who flatters). - Flattering words (谄言: words of adulation).
