The tube at the back of the oral cavity, composed of muscle and mucous membrane, is divided into three parts: the upper section, symmetrical to the nasal cavity, called "nasopharynx"; the middle section, symmetrical to the oral cavity, called "oropharynx"; and the lower section, located at the back of the throat, called "laryngopharynx". The pharynx serves as a common pathway for the respiratory and digestive tracts (also known as "throat").
