脸 (liǎn)

本义: 两颊的上部 (Primary meaning: upper part of the cheeks)
【造字法】: 形声。从肉,佥( qiān)声 (Character formation: phono-semantic; radical "meat" and phonetic "qiān"). In ancient times, "面" was used to represent the entire face. The character "脸" appeared during the Wei-Jin period, originally referring only to the upper part of the cheeks, and it was not until the Tang-Song period that it came to mean the entire face in colloquial speech.
