1. The original meaning: a gap in the door.
The character formation: it is a compound character. Anciently written as "閒", "间" is a later developed character. In the golden inscriptions, it is made from the elements of door and moon. As per the commentary in "说文解字注" by 段玉裁: "When the door opens, the moon enters, and the door has a gap that allows moonlight in." (jiàn)
