筝 [zhēng] 1. Stringed musical instrument, wooden and long. In ancient times, it had thirteen or sixteen strings, while now it has twenty-five strings. 2. (Noun) The original meaning: a plucked string instrument resembling the "se". The zheng has been popular since the Warring States period in the Qin region; hence it is also called "Qin zheng". 3. (Character formation) Phonetic compound. The character is formed from "bamboo" and relates to musical sounds. 4. (Reference) 1. "Shuo Wen": The zheng is a bamboo body musical instrument that produces sound by plucking strings. 2. "Yu Lan" quoting "Shuo Wen": The zheng is a five-stringed musical instrument. 3. "Chu Ci · Min Ming": Playing the zheng while accompanying rhythm. Note: "It is a small guqin." 4. "Ji Jiu Pian": Playing various musical instruments including the zheng. 5. (Example) - zheng ren (the person who plays the zheng) - zheng ruan (the Qin zheng and the ruan xian, two ancient plucked string instruments) - zheng ji (a courtesan who plays the zheng) - zheng zhu (the bridge on the zheng for the strings)
